APPLICATIONS 2023

You may apply:

If you hold a Master’s degree in Sociology, or in another field of the Social Sciences and Humanities;
Should you not fulfil the previous condition, if you hold an academic, scientific and professional curriculum with enough quality to attest to your ability and skills to carry out a doctorate in Sociology.

In order to apply, you will need digital copies of:

  • Official certificates of your higher education degrees, with final grades, in either English, Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese. If in any other language, an officially certified translation is required, into English or Portuguese.
  • Your academic, scientific and professional CV in any of the above languages.
  • Either a research project written according to the form used by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in the applications for doctoral studentships (see the FCT’s Application Guide, point 3.12: “Work Plan”), or a paper up to 1,500 words long, plus an abstract up to 150 words, stating your proposal for a sociologically relevant research theme or problem, in any of the above languages.
  • A short motivation letter, in any of the above languages.
  • Copies of all the above documents should be submitted in the on-line application form, as .pdf files. If accepted, you will later be required to provide the original degree certificates and translations.

The teaching language is Portuguese. Non portuguese-speaking applicants are advised to take Portuguese language classes beforehand to achieve at least B1-level language skills.

WHOM WE WILL INTEREST

The OpenSoc programme will interest both students who have recently completed their master degrees and wish to follow up and deepen their studies, and people already in the labour force who wish to come back to the University, seeking to update their knowledge and expand their professional skills.

All OpenSoc classes are held after working hours, from 8 p.m. two or three days each week.

Classes will be held in Portuguese. Non Portuguese-speaking students are advised to take a Portuguese language course before attending. Most readings will be in English, and student assignment papers may be written in English as well.
